Four years ago, Jalan Doraisamy was a nondescript row of colonial houses
nobody paid heed to.
Because of one man's vision, the dilapidated row was transformed into the
watering hole0cum-entertainment hub that is now known as Asian Heritage Row.
For his vision and contribution to the development of Asian Heritage Row,
William Ng was named Martell Elite of the year 2006 together with four other
deserving individuals from Hong Kong, China, Taiwan and Singapore.
"It is a humbling experience to be recognised for what I have done for the
city, as well as share this recognition with four other dynamic people" said
the 43-year old conservator and entertainment magnate during the Martell Elite
of the Year 2006 gala dinner at the Hilton Kuala Lumpur Hotel on Thursday.
"I'm very happy with Asian Heritage Row, and am currently turning Jalan Kamunting
(adjacent to Jalan Doraisamy) into a lifestyle retail area"
The four other recipients were award winning Hong Kong music composer Peter Kam,
Chinese modern artist and architect Mi Qiu, Singaporean fashion designer Wykidd
Song and Taiwanese political commentator and Uniter Evening News chief editorial
writer Spencer Tsai.
The five were recognised for their pursuit of the best quality in life and their
innovative vision to achieve great things.
"Although they hail from different backgrounds, each Martell Elite of the Year
personifies the brand values that have guided Martell though nearly 300 years
of making the world's finest cognacs - independent spirit, innovation and
inspiration and discerning enjoyment"said Martell & Co global brand ambassador
and sales director for Asia Pacific Jacques Menier.
"The personal and professional success they have enjoyed is a direct reflection
of the importance of these attributes which are also a key ingredient in our
own success as the world's oldest cognac houses"
Held for the second time, the even was attended by members of the Martell Elite
Club from the five Asian countries and featured a five course dinner paired with
the best of Martell's range of Cognacs prepared by Martell chef Eric Danger.
A charity auction was also held that night to raise funds for the Asia Art
Archive to support the Martell Contemporary Asian Art Research Grant.
The grant was established in 2005 and its objectives include encouraging an
understanding of the exciting developments in the contemporary Asian art scene
and providing resources to individuals wishing to carry out focused research
projects in Asia.
